Enforcement of “The Control of Tobacco Products
Regulation 1993” which was enacted in 1993 (CTPR93)
under the Food Act 1983, will continue to be the most
important activities to be carried out. The Control of
Tobacco Products Regulations 1993 came into force since
May 1994.
Among the provisions of the CTPR93
are; prohibition of all direct advertising and
sponsorship, requirement of fixed health warnings, also
ceiling levels of tar (20mg) and nicotine (1.5 mg).
Numerous public places and other designated areas have
been gazetted as ‘no smoking zones’ while tobacco sales
to minors, possession and smoking by any person under 18
years old is prohibited.
The CTPR93 will be amended to tighten
most of the provisions. Amongst these will be a total
ban of tobacco related promotions, requirements for more
effective health warnings, limitation to the
availability of cigarettes, lowering tar and nicotine
levels and to widen existing ‘no-smoking zones’.
The latest amendment to CTPR93 will
require all forms of tobacco advertising, promotion and
sponsorships to be prohibited by January 2003.
